Surprise Your Kids with a Fun Gingerbread House Decorating Party

Photography By Candi Noble

The holidays are in full swing here at my house, decorations are going up, parties are being planned, and kids are busy building their wishlists. This year why not surprise your kids and their friends with a gingerbread house decorating party?

I know what you’re thinking, I definitely don’t have time to plan an elaborate party this time of year. But that’s just the thing, it doesn’t have to be complicated. You can use the holiday decorations you already have as the backdrop for your partying.  As long as it’s bright and colorful and your kids are going to love it!

For our gingerbread house decorating party I choose to use some knit stockings, in my party colors, that I found at my local Target. I added colorful paper fans from BerryPom and James, and to anchor my table, I used two mini trees.

I used two table runners that say Merry Christmas with a few jingle bells, by turning them on their side I created a new look and a workspace for each child.

For the party food I kept things simple, and just served decorated sugar cookies and hot cocoa. I didn’t want to serve a ton of sweets, because I knew that the kids would be munching on the candy while they were decorating as well.

For my tableware I used two sets of really chic paper plates, don’t you just love them? Along with those, I added paper coffee cups with Merry Christmas wrappers from my friends over at Ship Party Return!

While you could definitely bake the gingerbread houses on your own, I’ve bought these ones at Target.
Work smarter not harder, right?

To give the kids an easy way to decorate their houses, I put them on red and white cake stands.  Then I added all the candy they needed for decorating into the two candy cane striped bowls.

You can make your gingerbread house decorating party as elaborate or simple as you want.  I think it would be a perfect weekend activity, or maybe even after school. Just invite over a few friends and let the kids go to town.  You’ll be the coolest mom in town in no time!
