Winter Woodlands Holiday Ideas with Michaels Store

This post is sponsored by Michaels.

You may have caught a sneak peek of this on my stories earlier this year, but I’m so excited to share details on the amazing Winter Woodlands holiday living room I got to style this year for Michaels Stores! Back in July, they reached out and asked if I would be willing to style one of their three new holiday decor collections at their studio in Dallas. Talk about a dream come true! Of course I said yes, and traveled from Austin to Dallas with my daughter (who did my hair and makeup for the shoot!) to spend two full days working with the Michaels team to create a cozy and enchanting holiday set up using tons of amazing items from their new Winter Woodlands collection

And, some of you may have already seen this set up in your mailbox! Michael’s chose my work to be featured on the cover of their Holiday Guide this year, and featured a photo of me in an ad for framing. To say I am thrilled is an understatement!

But now, you get to see the details from this holiday living room up close! Read on to see it all and get inspired, and then head over to michaels.com to get everything you need to recreate it yourself!

The Winter Woodlands Holiday Look

Everything about this collection screams “cozy”. I wanted to create a warm and comfortable space that makes you feel as if you are spending Christmas in a log cabin in the forest somewhere, even if you don’t live anywhere close to the woods - doesn’t that sound like an amazing escape?

I incorporated a lot of the plaid items from the collection, because what fabric is cozier than plaid? I kept a traditional red and green color scheme throughout, using black and white to break it up a bit, and adding brown elements as well for a warm and woodsy feel. Decorating was easy using the many adorable decor items in this collection!

DIY Projects

I also decided to get a bit creative with my mantel style. Rather than doing a traditional wreath over the mantel, I created my own Winter Woodland Holiday gallery wall by wrapping blank canvases of various sizes with wrapping paper, and adding ornaments and decor items from the collection to them using fishing wire.  Really easy, and makes a big impact!

Then, I created cute stocking tags. I grabbed some wooden beads, painted them with acrylic paint, strung them, and added tags. Next, I used my Cricut to create vinyl name labels for the tags - but if you don’t have a Cricut, you could easily just write these yourself with a marker.

Hot Cocoa Station

One of the things I wanted to be sure to incorporate to make the area more “me” was a Hot Cocoa Station. Every year, my children and I have a holiday hot cocoa night. We used to do a lot of crafty projects for the holidays together, but as they’ve gotten older and become teenagers, they’re less into crafting. But the hot cocoa fun has held on strong no matter how old they get, and I wanted to include a nod to that special tradition in my styling.

What do you think? This was definitely one of the coolest projects I’ve done for a brand, and was absolutely one of the highlights of my 2020. We all know this year has undoubtedly been difficult for all of us, but things like this, in addition to the never-ending support of my clients and online family (that’s you!), have kept me feeling grateful and full of cheer.

Thank you so much for being a part of the MINT Event Design Family - I’m grateful for you, and am wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons!
